Gemma Nugent Legal turned 7 in February. Birthdays prompt me to reflect and set the course for the year to come. Gemma Nugent Legal has always been a values-led legal practice. In 2026 and beyond, I’m re-focusing on the core values that guide everything I do:
SIMPLICITY | EXPERTISE | A HUMAN APPROACH
Brand values can feel abstract, and I have been looking for a way to express publicly what they mean to me in the way I do business. So today, I’m proud to present the Gemma Nugent Legal Manifesto.
The Oxford Dictionary defines “manifesto” as a public statement of policy and aims. My Manifesto isn’t a marketing proposition, and it isn’t a generic “about me” page. It’s a very personal expression of what my business means to me and what I want it to mean to my clients.
Being “value-led” means that my values drive how I make decisions and how I set boundaries. They fundamentally shape how I work with my clients. My values are not aspirational; they’re practical ideas that ground my work. They don’t just explain my why, although that’s part of it. My values are at the core of how my work is done, which is what clients really care about.
GEMMA NUGENT LEGAL MANIFESTO
SIMPLICITY
- Plain English always
- Clear, not clever
- Less contracts in your business = more people use them, and use them correctly
- Shorter is better
- Don’t say in 10 words what you can say in 4 words
- No jargon
- Banish legal gibberish
- Use visual elements to support understanding
- I understand and use the science of readability
- Use the simplest and best contract for the job at hand
- All roads lead to project outcomes
EXPERTISE
- My depth and breadth of knowledge helps me innovate
- I do the work, I don’t delegate it
- I’m the go-to contract expert for construction, engineering and mining services
- Continuous improvement always
- I learn from many places, not just law and construction
- My psychology and business qualifications support my legal knowledge
- I’m always trying new things
- I fail fast and learn fast, then pass my learning on to you
- There’s always more to learn
- I know what the current market expects and tolerates
- I do what I say I will do
A HUMAN APPROACH
- I want to have fun and laugh at work
- I make connections between people and ideas
- Law and contracts are about conversations
- I do the things that AI can’t do
- Relationships are everything – mine with you, you with your clients and suppliers
- Contracts are a way of capturing relationships – they are all about managing expectations, change and relationships
- People are at the core of every project and business
- My client-side experience gives me a unique perspective
- Negotiation, sales and delivery are about relationships and service
- My business is lifestyle centric, because I’m a parent, wife and a human before I’m a lawyer
- My business comes with me when I travel all over Western Australia
What the Manifesto means for me
As well as guiding the “how”, the Manifesto connects my professional values to my personal world. Gemma Nugent Legal is a lifestyle-centric business, designed so that I can continue to integrate my work with my personal commitments to my family and community in the years to come. Sustainability and integrity are important to me. I’ve carefully built a focused, specialist practice, so that I can personally do great projects with great clients that I really want to work with over the long term.
What the Manifesto means for you
This year, I’m using the Manifesto as my north star, so that I am always redirecting towards:
- The clients that I work best with
- The kind of work I do best
- Knowing who and what I say no to
Being guided by Manifesto will help me to make sure that you and I are aligned on what you need and how I will support you.
My ongoing commitment
I am very proud of my Manifesto. But, it isn’t frozen in time. I’m always learning, reflecting and looking for ways to be better. I can’t wait to test and refine the Manifesto, so that we can all see how it evolves during 2026. Thanks for coming with me on the journey.
